…is a time to experience grace as we are invited into new life in God’s family. In Baptism God grabs hold of us and promises to never let go. Baptism is also a time for friends, family and the Our Savior’s community to promise to help those baptized grow in their love for God, each other and the world. Our Savior’s pastors are honored to work with families desiring a baptism for an infant, child or adult.

Baptism Preparation Classes
This class provides a quick overview of the theological understanding of baptism from a Lutheran perspective focusing on the promises that are made in baptism. We will also give an orientation to the way we do baptisms at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. You will be fully equipped to celebrate yours or your child’s baptism. We ask that families please sign up for this class in advance so planning can be done accordingly. The class time is 10 am and lasts approximately an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is baptism?
Baptism is a gift of grace in which God, through water and word, claims us as God’s own child. In the Lutheran church, baptism is one of two ‘sacraments’ through which we are made new, forgiven people, adopted into God’s family, loved for life and beyond. In baptism, God is the actor, it’s God who initiates a relationship with us. In baptism, God chooses us and we joyfully respond to that choosing. In the same way that we do not choose our parents but respond to their love, the same is true in our relationship with God. In Baptism God claims us as children, adopts us into the family of God’s people, forgives us our sin for turning away from God, gives us the gift of his presence through the Holy Spirit, and promises us eternal life. A life of faith begins in the water and Word (promise of God’s love for us) of Holy Baptism.

Can I be baptized as an adult, and should I choose a sponsor?
Yes! Adults who have not been baptized who wish to explore a life of faith and a relationship with Jesus Christ are encouraged to be baptized. While baptismal sponsors are not necessary we encourage people of all ages to walk the journey of faith with others who can support us and grow alongside us in a life of faith.

What are sponsors, who and how many should I choose?
Baptismal sponsors are those who are chosen to help a newly baptized child or adult to grow in faith. Far more than an honorary position, baptismal sponsors are a blessing to a new Christian’s growth through prayer, love and a faithful example and should be chosen with that in mind. The number of sponsors is simply a preference on your part, generally two or three are chosen.

Can we request a "private" baptism?
Baptism is a community event that includes the entire congregation…one’s new faith family. Baptism, like adoption, welcomes an individual into the family of faith. While parents would never adopt a child and choose not to tell the rest of the family members, baptism welcomes and celebrates the new life of the baptized in the context of community. It is our normal practice to celebrate baptism during the regular worship life at Our Savior’s and allows us all to see God at work, celebrate God’s goodness and welcome our new brothers and sisters into the family.

Is there a 'baptism class' and do I have to attend?
Parents, and sponsors if available, will want to attend the baptism preparation class. Attend whenever you’re ready. Not only will the class walk you through the actual baptismal service, we’ll also help you to more fully unwrap this awesome gift of baptism. Even if you’ve attended the baptism class before you will want to get refreshed and connect with other parents.

My child has been baptized. What are our next steps in this journey of faith?
The most important thing we could ever do for our child’s journey of faith is to tend to our own. Modeling faithful behavior – talking about our faith, praying together, worshiping regularly, and reading scripture, – communicates values to our children. As our children grow, reading bible stories together helps to teach values and faithful living. And, of course, your children are welcome to all of the faith-filled growth opportunities at Our Savior’s. As part of the baptism class, we will discuss more ways for your children to “catch” the faith.
